Inspiration Statement:

Throughout history in all cultures there has been some form of expression through movement, performance, and music. There is something within each
individual that can be stirred when stories are portrayed in a visual and musical form. Performing arts is an expression of humanity and can evoke emotions deep within, touching something innate found in all people. They serve as a medium for connection despite division and can bridge gaps that very few things in our world can. Performing arts requires no language, can be shared by everyone in some way or shape and activate the senses through auditory and visual means. Triple Threat: International Performing Arts Community Center allows for the education of these arts. This establishment serves as a community center open to all. It caters to everyone regardless of talent, age and ability. This center allows members to be united in a common passion for the arts, despite training, funds or other barriers that would normally cause division. Various amenities and classes revolve around the education of performing arts found in all cultures, worldwide. Expression of humanity through performing arts is an essential part of the human experience.
In a world full of division, Triple Threat provides a unique place for unanimity.
Applied Knowledge Statement
To approach the design for the community center, I focused on two avenues: the physical layout of the space and the functional uses.
Triple Threat implements shapes that allude to the ideological core of the center. I wanted the floor plan to maintain visual balance yet remain
interesting and out of the box. Angled walls and hexagonal shapes are distributed throughout the architecture of the interior space.
The first-floor interactive lobby is encompassed by a second story catwalk that overlooks a focal wall. Three Masland carpet tiles and planks are incorporated to distinguish the corridor beneath the catwalk and the two-story vaulted lobby. The Penrose triangle, found in the branding image, represents the three concentrations of performing arts, as well as promotes unity within complexity. This motif is incorporated in the Daltile custom pattern featured on the floor of the front reception. Suede Gray, Cornsilk and Uptown Taupe Half Hexagon tiles achieve the
illusion of the impossible triangle. Finally, forty-five-degree angles are planted within the space to encourage movement and allow for Wayfinding.
Triple Threat’s interactive areas focus on the development of the three specific concentrations within performing arts: music, acting, and
dance. Two dance studios offer classes which introduce numerous styles of movement from around the world. Music is an integral part and
is highlighted in the recording studios, a semi-thrust stage recital hall, and the musical instrument rehearsal room. In this space, members can try out different instruments of their choosing, as well as experience the unique Mendelssohn Effektorium virtual conductor. Music and vocal
lessons are offered in the two-story rehearsal hall. These classes develop one’s ears for melodies and demonstrate a variety of cultural music genres. Finally, the center provides a place for budding artists to develop their crafts. New filmmakers or amateur photographers can use the
versatile film/green screen studio to create promotional videos, capture product images, build their resume and more. Local community
theaters or small acting troupes can access the amphitheater, the two dressing rooms, and the fully equipped construction, prop and costume shop. Multipurpose classrooms can be reserved for rehearsals, auditions, improv, meetings and so much more. A variety of different acting courses are presented, to allow for creative expression within a safe and fostering environment for all ages and backgrounds. These spaces are
effective and comfortable, designed with ERG and Nevins seating and tables.
Additional features include the display hall, which highlights intricate miniature sets of famous productions, timeless costumes, and historical deep dives into major performing arts influences from cultures around the world. Unique Daltile My City patterns guide users through the engaging space. The two-story lobby includes a large-scale world map. This acrylic focal wall feature incorporates LED lights. Specific world regions highlight when the button on the associated image is pressed. Two interactive screens, under the canopy of the catwalk, provide historical information and details about the center itself. Overall, Triple Threat offers a variety of unique encounters, allowing people of all
backgrounds to have a place to experience creativity within performing arts.
